In an ideal world, would you prefer that our government had no say over marriage, that ‘civil unions’ would, in a sense, exist between best friends, lovers, married folks, singles, and whoever else for the purposes of the legal benefits though? I would think things would be better for all if both sides of the gay marriage argument (and all ambivalent to it) would work for this goal instead. You?

That is basically what I suggest. The Church has no problem and in fact supports extending legal benefits to others. I just think marriage should be reserved to the religious realm.
